AME Petrographic Analysis
Applied Materials & Engineering, Inc. provides petrographic analysis of aggregate, concrete, cementitious-based products and other construction materials to aid in failure analysis investigations and quality control testing of building materials. Microscopic and optical examinations can determine the following concrete, mortar and other cementitious products characteristics:
- Estimation of water-cement ratio
- Identification & volumetric estimation of pozzolanic materials
- Identification of deleterious materials and reactions
- Alkali-silica reactivity
- Chemical and physical sulfate attack
- Characterization of quality and soundness
- Degree of carbonation and other environmental influences
- Aggregate quality
- Maximum aggregate size and gradation
- Entrapped and entrained air contents

In addition to our optical microscope capabilities, we also provide powder X-ray Diffraction Analysis (XRD) for the identification of inorganic compounds (for example: minerals, cement types and cement hydration products, pigments, fillers, and clays) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) for the identification of organic compounds (polymer coatings, paint, etc.).
